Tourist Attractions in Coonoor

Coonoor is a picturesque hill station in India that is located within the paradisiacal beauty of the Niligiri Hills. The lush and breathtaking nature of Coonoor combined with its exquisite flora and fauna have made the town a popular getaway for holiday-makers and honeymooners seeking a relaxing and peaceful getaway. Attractions in the town range from beautiful waterfalls to panoramic lookout points that allow visitors breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The events and festivals that are held annually at Coonoor have also attracted numerous visitors from across the country and around the globe due to the spectacular and unique nature of these celebrations. The Fruit and Vegetable Festival and the Tea and Tourism Festival are the most popular.
The Fruit and Vegetable Festival is a famous event renowned throughout Coonoor and the surrounding region. This annual festival is held during the end of May, lasting only for one day. The event is held at Sim's Park which is one of Coonoor's most popular attractions that is well recognized for its natural beauty. This 12 hectare landscaped park lies in the midst of a ravine where thousands of exotic plants, trees and shrubs grow abundantly. The festival features numerous cultural performances and shows, whilst its main attraction is the wide range of locally grown fruits and vegetables that are on display. Tourists can purchase these fruits, and other fruit products that include jam, pickles and jellies.

This could be Ooty's twin, but Coonoor with its distinctive charm is different. Mist-clad Nilgiri hills, the bright green of the tea estates contrasting sharply against the red poinsettias and quaint bungalows that speak stories of what this was. It was once home to the Coons tribe, and possibly that's where the name comes from. Of course, legends have it that Coonoor owes its name to the kurinji flowers that bloom on its slopes every 12 years, bathing in a sheer blue. Whatever be the reason, this British town retains some of its colonial flavour - in the old-world cottages with names with Honeysuckle Views, in lanes called Elk Hill and in the quiet final resting places shaded by drooping trees. Trip to the hot-spots, trek as much as you wish and gulp endless cups of the aromatic Nilgiri tea.
